There is such a thing as a free hug

By Julian Broadhead

No matter how much you love the urban space you inhabit, there are inevitably times when it can get on top of you, reducing your range of facial expressions to a straight choice between gritted teeth or scowls of contempt. Thankfully, things always get better and it often takes only the smallest of things to make your outlook improve; a smile from a stranger, an act of kindness or a quirky detail you’ve never noticed before. Even better, your prospects are improving as you could soon be on the end of an all-embracing hug from a complete stranger.

Started in 2003 by personal coach Mayella Reynolds, Random Huggers do exactly what their name suggests. So simple and yet, there is something very special about a good hug. Certainly, Mayella is not alone in her appreciation of this most underrated of gifts, with Random Huggers Days scheduled to take place over the next month or so in England, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, South Africa and New Zealand.

If you’d like to be one of the random huggers then they are still recruiting volunteers for their upcoming events. If the random part doesn’t quite appeal though, why not take the opportunity to hug someone you already know? You might be pleasantly surprised at how rewarding it is for all involved. But perhaps most important of all, no matter what your preference (long, short, loose, tight, horizontal arms, diagonal arms etc.), just make sure you hug like you mean it!
